Mexican director Gerardo Naranjos superb tale of teenage love simmers with pent-up energy and sexual and political tensions. Expelled from his exclusive seminary for fantasising about shooting his teachers, teenager Román is sent to the local public school. There, he introduces himself to his fellow students by pretending to commit suicide in assembly. Watching this mock hanging is Maru, and when these two disaffected teens meet in detention, naturally theyre immediately smitten with one another. Slipping between reality and fantasy, present and past, and film and photography, provides the film with a heady, virtuoso blur that brilliantly evokes the dreamy intensity of its adolescent heroes.
